Weissman School of Arts and Sciences

Writing Center

The Writing Center's mission is to help all students become better writers. Students of all skill levels come to us with a variety of questions and concerns. The range of students extends from excellent writers who understand the benefit of a second set of expert eyes, to second language learners with basic and persistent writing problems, and includes everyone in between.

We coach students to become more effective writers by focusing on the individual issues they face. We offer tips on grammar, punctuation, and style. We can provide an overview of the academic essay (thesis, argument and counterargument, conclusions) and help you:

  • Read texts closely
  • Understand your assignment
  • Move from assignment to topic
  • Structure and writing an essay
  • Develop a thesis
  • Begin the academic essay
  • Create an outline
  • Develop a counterargument
  • Synthesize a summary
  • Write topic sentences and transitions
  • Write a comparative analysis
  • End the essay
  • Revise drafts

If you find yourself facing your own writing issues, we strongly advise you to make an appointment. Sessions are 30 and 45 minutes long. Note: When dealing with a specific assignment, make an appointment well before your writing assignment is due but after you have prepared as much as you can.
