Freshman Year is perhaps the most challenging and exciting time in a college student's career. Transitioning from high school to college is difficult: college affords a student the opportunity to make endless choices, and this freedom can be overwhelming. Your time is yours-- you plan your own schedule, deciding which courses to take and when to take them, how to spend your free time and with whom to spend it. The decisions you make can determine your future.
As a student in the SEEK Program, you will be encouraged to develop your own sense of self, something that is often discouraged in high school. However, your counselor is always there to guide you as you navigate your way through your freshman year.
Pre-Freshman Summer Experience
SEEK students are offered the opportunity to jump-start their college career. Beginning in July, students participate in a Pre-Freshman Summer Experience that helps them adjust to college life before they begin school in the fall. This six week program runs four days a week from approximately 10am to 4pm.
In the Summer of 2007, we will be offering a number of programs for you to choose from.
- Anthropology (3 credits)
- Polictical Science (3 credits)
- Writing and/ or Reading (No college credit)
- Intermediate or College Algebra (No college credit)
All programs include academic support, enrichment activies and field trips. Peer mentor participate in the program and guide students as they begin their time at Baruch.
(**Please Note: Your performance on the placement exam will determine which courses you are eligible to take.)
Freshman Seminar
All freshmen are enrolled in a year-long Freshman Seminar, lead by their counselor. The course, held weekly, familarizes students with the college and all of its resources. It is a place for students to voice their concerns and speak informally with their classmates. In addition, an older SEEK student is present at every session and serves as a peer mentor. Students learn to act as inventors of their own lives and make conscious choices that will put them on a path to success.
