Freshman Seminar Student Leader 2008
Freshman Seminar Student Leaders play a vital role in helping incoming freshman adjust to the rigors of college life. They can be a major influence on a first year student's educational goals as well as instrumental in the successful transition of a student's life at Baruch. While working with students in a classroom environment, Freshman Seminar leaders discuss a myriad of topics ranging from academic to personal responsibilities. They help first year students explore factors involved in planning a course of study, selecting a career, and much more.
Freshman Seminar Student Leaders are selected based on the following criteria:
- Successful completion of TEAM Baruch leadership training
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong leadership abilities
- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Good academic and disciplinary standing with the College
Responsibilities of a Freshman Seminar Student Leader include:
- Exposing first year students to the diverse Baruch environment
- Helping incoming students adjust to college life
- Participating in all Freshman Seminar class activities
- Meeting with the Freshman Seminar instructor every week to discuss class content for the following week's session
- Leading selected class discussions as discussed with the Seminar Instructor
- Serving as a peer mentor for the students in the class
- Assisting students with assignments and requirements
- Participating in all peer training sessions
- Attending bi-weekly supervision groups
- Assisting freshman seminar instructors with assignments
- Maintaining records of student attendance and assignments
- Participating in Freshman Seminar training on August 18, 20 and 21
- Participating in Baruch Beginnings Kick off events (August 25 and August 26) as well as TEAM Baruch events during the Fall semester
Student leaders have contact with students primarily in a group (class) setting
with a Freshman Seminar instructor. They are available to meet with students
before and after class to discuss personal questions and concerns as well.
Weekly hour long supervision sessions are required of all those who participate
as student leaders. Supervision sessions provide student leaders with an opportunity
to discuss questions that arise in running a class in a supportive setting.
A review of the content for the following class session is also discussed along
with tips on presenting particular issues. Supervision is led by the staff
from the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.
Training to become a Freshman Seminar Leader:
Training will be on August 18, 20 and 21.
Attendance and participation in Baruch Beginnings Kick off events on August 25 and August 26 is expected.
